When Kisumu defeated Daystar Falcons 19-7 in KRU Championship semifinal action on Saturday 4 March 2023, a return to the top tier Kenya Cup league for the 2023/24 Kenya Cup season set to kick off in November was secured. This ended three years of playing in the second tier following their relegation at the close of the 2019/20 season.
Head Coach and former international backrow Lawrence Buyachi, himself a two time Kenya Cup winner with Nakuru in 2013 and 2014 spoke about the lakeside city team’s key target for next season, saying, “Ours is very simple as we brace for our Kenya Cup return. To survive. We are already working behind the scenes to survive and we believe we will get there.}
Buyachi also summarized the lakeside city team’s Championship campaign, saying, “It started from the onset when I got the opportunity to coach a big club like Kisumu RFC. We set the targets for what we needed to do for the season. Our bare minimum was Kenya Cup qualification and we kept the ball rolling.”
“There was superb engagement from all sectors…the playing unit, coaching unit and exco were in tandem. We had a common goal, and we attained it, “he concluded.
