Kabras Sugar RFC and Catholic Monks RFC have officially been promoted to the Kenya Cup and will make their debut in the country’s top tier league during the 2014/2015 season set to kick off in November.
Their promotions were confirmed by the Kenya Rugby Union. Both sides featured in last year’s second tier competition, the Nationwide League, Kabras defeating Catholic to be crowned second division champions.
Kabras’ promotion means that the Western Kenya town of Kakamega now has two teams in the top flight, the other team being Western Bulls who secured promotion at the start of the 2012/2013 campaign.
With the Monks promotion, there are now four university sides in the Kenya Cup, the others being Strathmore Leos (Strathmore University), Mean Machine (University of Nairobi) and Blak Blad (Kenyatta University).
The Kenya Rugby Union also confirmed the relegation of Kisumu RFC and Eldoret RFC to the Nationwide league following their performances at the close of the 2013/2014 season. Both sides propped the league, finishing in the last two positions (13th & 14th ) respectively.
The upcoming season’s fixtures will be released in due course.
