Two seasons after hosting its first ever Kenya Cup fixture, the Western Kenya town of Kakamega hosts its first ever top flight rugby derby when Western Bulls host Kabras Sugar in a Kenya Cup match day eight fixture at the Kakamega High School on Saturday 17 January 2015.

Western Bulls made their Kenya Cup debut during the 2012/13 season, and have slowly gone about their business as they look to grow into a rugby powerhouse. They have proven to be a difficult opponent to handle at their Kakamega High School home, claiming a few scalps along the way.

They are currently placed tenth on the log, gathering 12 points off three wins and four defeats from seven outings. A derby win against Kabras will certainly give them bragging rights and the confidence heading into their final five fixtures.

Kabras Sugar are in their maiden league season and are certainly making the most of it. They lost their opening two fixtures against KCB and Top Fry Nakuru respectively but have since gone on to post five wins on the trot, five wins that have lifted them into the fourth playoff slot with the regular season winding down thick and fast.

They will surely be motivated to post a win against their more illustrious opponents. This match is definitely one not to be missed.

A few things to note.
1. Both sides are sponsored by sugar firms. Western Bulls under Mumias Sugar’s sponsorship and Kabras Sugar under West Kenya Sugar’s sponsorship.
2. Western Bulls Team Manager Newton Ong’alo and Kabras Sugar Head Coach Anthony Ogot are brothers in law.
This match kicks off at 4.00pm.
